We use a wide range of exciting and engaging texts as a stimulus for the children’s writing and as a means to improve their vocabulary. Pupils are taught the relationship between sounds and letters and taught the structure of words through discrete spelling lessons and an increasing wide knowledge of grammar is taught in writing lessons which children apply across the curriculum in their writing.

Music
Music Intent:
At Oakfield Junior School, Music is valued as an important part of our curriculum.
Singing together in classes and assemblies is proven to be excellent for engagement in school, self-esteem, empathy and well-being. We often connect our learning in music to other areas of the curriculum. Singing songs linked to a topic helps to imprint the information in children’s minds.
Using voices and musical instruments to rehearse and perform in various settings encourages children to revise and improve their work, fostering pride in striving for their best. Rehearsal and performance require discipline and team work. The sense of achievement that result, have a positive impact on motivation and confidence beyond the music classroom.
Listening and responding to music extends children’s auditory skills, whilst creating and composing their own music can develop creative thinking and social skills. Through music, we can be relaxed, stimulated, challenged and confident, curious learners. The skills we learn at Oakfield set us on the path for creative careers, transferable skills and mindful music-making for life.

French
French Intent:
The French curriculum’s intent is to give our children the skills, language learning strategies and knowledge about language to enable them to enjoy learning languages for life. I foster their curiosity, not just about the French language, but also about the culture and traditions of France (and other French-speaking parts of the world). British and EAL pupils gain the confidence to speak (and later to write) in French and to compare their own languages and cultural experiences with those discussed. A caring, co-operative environment gives the children the courage to experiment in the foreign language; speaking singly, in pairs and in groups; participating in conversations, games and songs. Pupils (particularly upper juniors) are encouraged to be creative in French, as well as using it as a tool to acquire and relay information.
